Abbey National Insurance is launching Personal Accident Insurance - something it claims is increasingly necessary with nearly 6m Britons visiting casualty each year.

The Personal Accident Plan provides a lump sum of up to £60,000 in permanent disability benefits and others in respect of a range of injuries and physical disablements resulting from an accident. The plan can also provide up to £60 per day to cover a hospital stay.

The plan provides customers with 24-hour worldwide cover against specified injuries or disabilities.

Abbey National pointed out it is important to have cover as State entitlements such as Statutory Sick Pay, Incapacity Benefit and Severe Disablement Allowance are getting increasingly limited and difficult to claim.

Abbey National spokesman Peter Jones said: "People are becoming more aware that they cannot rely on State benefits in many cases of injury or loss of capacity to earn, so the need for a range of protection policies such as Abbey National's Personal Accident Plan is growing.

"As with our other protection policies, the Personal Accident plan is a specific insurance for a specific range of circumstances. It complements Abbey National's existing range of mortgage protection, personal loan protection and cover for critical illness, by providing for a lump sum of up to £60,000 in the event of permanent disability and up to £60 daily recompense for hospitalisation."
