Royal & SunAlliance has revamped its critical illness cover in the light of new ABI guidance on including heart valve surgery and the possibly BSE-related Creutzfeldt-Jakob brain disease.

The list of illnesses covered by its Progressive Protection term assurance has been boosted from 17 to 25 at no extra cost to customers.

Ronnie Martin, RSA marketing manager for life and health, said: "The trigger for the review was the ABI issuing its code of practice on critical illness last year which recognised more illnesses defined as serious."

He added: "There have been some concerns about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease but it's still comparatively rare. The addition to the policy is really for peace of mind."

The policy is mainly targeted at key personnel in the business market.

Martin said the policy represents a real opportunity to intermediaries, since its recent survey revealed almost 80% of small and medium-sized businesses without such cover were not aware of its availability.

Available commission is 75% of the first year's premium with five per cent on renewal from the third year onwards, or 15% throughout the policy's term.

"The policy has a progressive approach which allows firms to organise cover when they need it, to enable it to reflect any change in key personnel."
