National sides could not afford cover against Togo attack

Most of the 16 African football associations with teams in Angola for the African Cup have not taken out insurance for their players, the Times reports.

The cost of the premiums for insuring against events such as Friday’s attack on the Togo team bus could be prohibitive. Insurance has been left to clubs. Insuring against kidnap could cost as much as £35,000 a player over three years.

Only the richest clubs, such as those in the Barclays Premier League, are likely to have bought such policies.

Group policies

Michael Owen, director of accidents, health and sports contingency, at broker Lockton, said: “It is very unlikely that local associations would insure against acts of terrorism. The richer clubs insure all of their players as a group usually.

“But it means that a player from a big club could line up alongside a player in the national team who has no cover.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
