Atrium Underwriting has appointed John Spence as the aviation underwriter on Syndicate 609, with effect from 1 September.

Mr Spence will be underwriting a book of aviation hull and liabilities consisting of both general aviation and airline accounts and complementing the extensive hull war book already being underwritten by the syndicate.

The new business written by Mr Spence will be assumed on a consortium basis with Atrium's other Syndicate 570.

Mr Spence joins Atrium from Hardy Underwriting, where he worked for 21 years. Two of those years were as aviation underwriter.

Steve Cook, the group managing director of Atrium, said: "We are really pleased that John is joining the team. His experience and record of maintaining a profitable account throughout the insurance cycle is exactly what we look for in our underwriters."

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
