Back pain is the most common reason for making a claim on private medical insurance, said Legal & General following an analysis of its healthcare claims database.

The top five conditions for which people claimed were low back pain, hernia, knee pain, breast lump, and shoulder pain, it said.

In response to its findings, Legal & General has produced an online guide called ‘Back Pain: Quick Tips to a Healthier Back’, containing suggestions on simple exercises and advice on posture and diet.

Legal & General’s healthcare customer services director Tessa Webster, said: “Our analysis shows that back conditions cause pain and discomfort to a large number of men and women across the country.

“As one of the country’s leading healthcare providers, our policies do of course cover care for back pain, which can involve many weeks or months of treatment.

“However, prevention is better than cure and we hope that our guide will help people to look after their backs, and also help to avoid some of the more common causes of back pain; advice is given on lifting, posture, exercise and diet.

The guide is available free of charge from legalandgeneral.com/back.
