Britons shop around more for motor insurance than they do for plumbers, electricians and solicitors, according to Abbey National.

In its latest study, Abbey National found that a third of UK drivers ask for six quotes when buying motor cover. In contrast when shopping around for other services, people usually seek two quotes.

61% of people looking for decorators look for two quotes, as do the majority of those looking for plumbers (51%).

Abbey National marketing manager Mike Hildred said: "Competitiveness of premiums and easy access to information encourages drivers to shop around for motor insurance."

The survey found that applying for cover online is also becoming popular. 37% of respondents check for quotes online.

Hildred said: "Motorists who like to get several insurance quotes will benefit from buying online."
