Telecoms giant has Alternative Business Structure approved

BT

Telecoms giant BT has won a licence to offer legal services to its corporate customers.

The company has launched BT Law, which will provide legal services for motor accidents.

The firm won a licence to operate from the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA). The licence began this month.

BT Law will also incorporate BT Claims, a well-established motor claims management arm handling 35,000 corporate fleet vehicles.

BT is the biggest firm yet to win a licence to operate a legal services arm. Direct Line and Admiral are two insurers considering launching a similar service.

All firms can now offer legal services, or buy a law firm, under the Legal Services Act. The act is also known as the Tesco Law, because it gives any firm the power to operate in the legal market.

The law has been controversial because some fear it will offer a way for insurers to swerve the referral fee ban.
