Car crime rises dramatically during the summertime, with most of it taking place on the victim's doorstep.

A survey quoted by broker Allen & Allen (A&A) suggests 34 in every 1,000 people will be the victims of car crime, with 64% of it taking place when vehicles are parked in the vicinity of the victim's home. Perhaps more startlingly, it reveals that 26% will occur right outside their door.

Chief executive of the A&A Group Tony Allen said the warmer months mean drivers take fewer precautionary methods, “leaving windows open and doors unlocked”. At this time of year people also tend to be drinking more, which increases the risk of drink driving and lowers awareness. “Opportunist thieves need only a moment to see that people are distracted and a further moment to take advantage of the situation or make off with the vehicle”, Allen added.
