Insurer Cigna International has teamed up with medical management and security assistance provider International SOS to provide an online global network of care facilities for expatriates.

The two companies said they aimed to provide expatriates with "speedy, reliable access to quality healthcare while overseas".

The new service was the first to marry "online" and "on call" capabilities with "an easy-to-access web database of physician-screened global healthcare resources", the companies said.

Cigna International Expatriate Benefits senior vice president Andrew Mellen said: "Companies invest millions of dollars sending their best employees abroad. The last thing they want is for employees and families to be anxious about accessing quality healthcare."

The network provides information on nearly 5,500 hospitals and doctors outside the US, as well as online and telephone access to full-time multi-lingual staff physicians who can help to identify medical experts and treatment centres.
