Siemens Datatrak has launched a new Thatcham-certified vehicle security and tracking device, Trakbak II, to capitalise on insurers' increasing interest in positioning technology.

Trakbak II will use Datatrak's low frequency positioning and private radio network and will be available through Datatrak distributors. Datatrak is a real-time cargo-tracking device for fleet managers.

Datatrak UK managing director Mike Bateson said discussions with insurers revealed determined thieves were still bypassing security systems on commercial vehicles and private cars, prompting him to develop Trakbak II.

Thatcham research engineer Martyn Randle said: "Stolen vehicles were becoming a greater risk to the insurance industry, not only with the replacement of high value vehicles, but also due to the loss of load and the effects of stolen vehicles involved in accidents."

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
