Deacon Insurance has launched a consumer website detailing the new rights of leasehold flat owners to take over the management of their properties.

It said the site is intended to raise public awareness of the new rights and to channel buildings insurance applications towards the company.

The right to take over the management of leasehold properties, known as right to manage, without having to prove any fault on behalf of the current manager or landlord, was brought in under the Common and Leasehold Reform Act 2002.

Julie Purkiss of Deacon Insurance said she believed many flat owners would opt to exercise their right to manage, as it was easier and less expensive than buying the freehold.

The website, righttomanage.co.uk, contains information on legal, insurance and management matters, said the company.
