Around 600 motorcyclists have signed a lobby petition to Number 10 to bring in legislation to prosecute people and companies for not cleaning up diesel spillages on the roads.

The campaign was launched with the help of Diesel – one of the Gladiators – at a launch in Birmingham.

The petition is the brainchild of Bennetts insurance brokers.

Managing director Michael Bennett said: "Whilst legislation is being introduced to stop diesel spillages occurring, accidents still happen because of the unseen danger posed by spillage as soon as it occurs."

The petition is to be made available to the British Motorcycling Federation – which is expected to join the campaign when the matter comes before Parliament.
