Nearly 10% of British drivers are driving by the seat of their pants, according to new research from motor insurer esure.

Now while this may not surprise many of our readers who suffer the vagaries of British driving, all is not quite as it seems. What esure is revealing in its pants reference, is more material than metaphorical.

One in ten of us, it seems, will carry a spare pair of pants with us when driving, in case of emergencies Backchat assumes.

That's 1.9 million pairs, enough by our reckoning to cover the Dome (which would at least be appropriate).

Yet Marks & Spencer still can't make a decent profit.
