Dual, the underwriting arm of Hyperion Insurance Group, has appointed Alan Grant as non-executive chairman of its international board and non-executive director of its UK operating companies, it said today.

Grant has almost 40 years of experience of the insurance industry, having started his career in the London insurance market in 1975 with Halford Shead & Partners. He has also held roles with EF Williams Syndicate, before leaving the Lloyd’s market for CNA Reinsurance, where he was appointed underwriting director for the specialty lines account.

After managing his own Lloyd’s syndicate, Grant joined Converium (now SCOR Group), where he established an FSA-regulated insurance company and a Lloyd’s corporate member; he was appointed the chief executive of both companies as well as chief underwriting officer for specialty lines.

Dual international chief executive Damien Coates, said: “It is excellent news for Dual that Alan has agreed to join us. His deep experience of the market and of building successful businesses will make him a great guiding voice, and I am looking forward to working with him as we continue to build Dual into a leading global underwriting agency.”

Grant said: “I am delighted to accept the chairmanship of this dynamic and fast-growing underwriting agency.  I greatly admire its people and the success Dual has enjoyed to date, and I look forward to helping the company consolidate its position as a pre-eminent underwriter of specialty lines products for its risk partners.”

Hyperion chief executive, David Howden added: “The appointment of Alan is another important step in strengthening the Group’s risk management and governance structure, as we work to deliver an exceptional, disciplined and controlled underwriting environment for our insurer partners. I have known Alan for many years and his entrepreneurial background and market expertise will bring an important level of challenge and guidance to Dual as it continues its journey.”
