Businesses could be hit by higher employers' liability premiums if risk management commitments are not met, warned the ABI.

The move follows a 25% rise in commercial property insurance claims for theft with losses of £199m in 2002 compared to £159m in 2001.

Average claims have risen 35% with individual companies claiming £2,240 in 2002 compared to £1,660 in 2001.

Domestic theft remains largely unchanged, rising by just 1% from £573m in 2002 compared to £568m in 2001.
