Brokers have warned that professional footballers are not taking out adequate personal accident and illness cover after a player clinched an undisclosed compensation payout this week.

Tony Vaughan received the payout after suffering a career-ending injury while with League Two side Stockport.

Aon Sport said Vaughan's case sent out a warning to all players about the dangers of suddenly finding themselves without an income.

Steve Talboys, development executive for Aon Sport, said: "There's little you can do to prevent an accident or illness but you can protect yourself against loss of earnings."
