Category 1 storm expected to miss the US east coast

The US National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Fred became a Category 1 hurricane over the eastern Atlantic on Tuesday but was forecast to steer clear of any land, Reuters reports

Fred had top winds of 75mph and was west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa.

It was expected to turn northwest and then north, keeping thousands of miles east of the US East Coast.

By 11pm EDT (0300 GMT), the storm was located about 445 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and was moving to the west-northwest at about 12mph.
