The International Risk Governance Council (IRGC) has appointed Christopher Bunting as its first general secretary, it announced.

The Swiss Government founded the Geneva-based organisation in June 2003 with the aim of supporting governments, business and other organisations, and to foster public confidence in risk governance and related decision-making.

The IRGC said: "The appointment is a significant step for the IRGC as it builds the organisational structure through which it will make contributions to the understanding and management of risks and related decision making."

Bunting, a British citizen, has worked in the public and private sectors, as well as the engineering, manufacturing and agricultural industries, professional services and the voluntary sectors, said the IRGC.
