Insurancetimes.co.uk is continuing its look at the latest insurance tenders for contracts to public and private organisations.

Today, we look at Lancashire Combined Fire Authority's call for insurance cover worth up to £1m for each class of business.

One of the ten largest fire authorities in the UK, the Lancashire authority claimed that many insurers avoid bidding for public sector insurance contracts.

Talking to InsuranceTimes.co.uk a Lancashire Council spokesman said it would prefer to drop its existing insurers when their contracts expire in April. The authority
currently places most of its risk with The St Paul Companies.

He added, however that they would find it difficult to do so because there are only a few insurers willing to compete for their business.

Council spokesman, Peter Hale, said: "The large insurers that we use always take a long time to get renewals back to us. The truth is that most of them aren't that bothered about public sector risks."

Despite insurers' claims that local authorities generate large claims, Hale said small authorities do not generate "significant claims".

The Fire Authority is seeking cover for:

  • Engineering insurance.
  • Motor insurance.
  • Liability insurance services.
  • Liability claims management.
  • Motor vehicle claims management.
  • Business interruption.
  • Travel.
