Independent Insurance's panel of legal firms will meet the Policyholders' Protection Board (PPB) to discuss the firms' demands for payment from policyholders.

Davies Arnold Cooper, Davies Lavery and Berrymans Lace Mawer have pursued Independent policyholders for legal fees accrued on their claims.

Some policyholders have been billed more than £25,000 for work done at Independent's instruction.

While some policyholders have paid the firms, others have refused, including those that have joined a legal action organised by Claimex.

The firms met the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) three weeks ago.

Biba chief executive Mike Williams said they had now requested a meeting with the PPB and were awaiting a response.

Meanwhile, Claimex director Richard Hanson-James said at least 25 policyholders had committed to the legal action, with another 70 still to decide.

He said one London brokerage had offered substantial funding to the action group, which will seek Queen's Counsel's opinion on October 5.
