Insurance conglomerate Liberty Mutual Insurance (LMI) is to cut 425 positions in Ireland due to high demand for a voluntary redundancy programme announced by the firm last year.

A total of 380 staff have opted to leave the firm voluntarily, and a further 45 employees were chosen for compulsory redundancy.

In November, the company said it was looking for 285 redundancies and said it hoped the majority would be voluntary.

A spokesman for the insurer said there was greater demand than anticipated for the programme and the company decided to facilitate the request of some additional employees to leave.

The planned job cuts represent about one-third of LMI’s 1,450-strong workforce.

About 110 jobs will go from the company’s headquarters in Cavan, 115 will go from Enniskillen and 200 from Blanchardstown in Dublin.

The majority of staff will leave in March.
