Marsh UK and Ireland risk and governance director John Nicholson has retired from the broker.

He had been in the role since 2009 and was responsible for developing and embedding risk management and governance policies across the firm’s UK activities.

Nicholson will be replaced by Sally Williams who will join the Marsh board as director of risk and governance.

Williams joins Marsh from National Australia Bank (NAB) Group, where she was head of risk, London branch, and a board member of NAB Europe Ltd.

Prior to joining NAB in 2005, she was group director of risk at Aviva.

Marsh UK and Ireland chief executive Mark Weil said: “At Marsh, we believe that embedding robust risk management practices and ensuring that colleagues perform to the highest ethical and professional standards are absolutely fundamental in a well-managed company.

“The strengthening of our UK board with the appointment of Sally, who is a compliance professional of the highest calibre, is testament to our continued commitment to adhering to these standards.”

Commenting on her appointment Williams added: “The global financial services industry remains under regulatory scrutiny following the financial crisis, and firms are faced with meeting the challenges presented by this changing regulatory landscape.

“I look forward to building on the firm’s best practices, and ensuring that Marsh continues to be regarded as an integrity benchmark for the industry.”
