Peter Woolterton, MMA Insurance chairman, died on Monday following a short illness, said the company.
Woolterton joined the company in 1992 when he was appointed director of Norman Insurance. He subsequently became chairman in 1996.
He was instrumental in directing the company over many successful years, said MMA.
The company said friends and colleagues, as well as those throughout the industry, would miss him.
