Trevor Matthews hails Robin Spencer’s appointment

New Aviva UK general insurance chief executive Robin Spencer will keep the insurer’s UK general insurance strategy, according to Aviva executive director, developed markets Trevor Matthews.

Spencer was previously Aviva chief financial risk officer and takes up the reins from David McMillan, now Aviva director group transformation.

Matthews said: “There is no reason to change a strategy that is working so well. I’ve been involved in looking at that strategy, in my role here. And Robin has had a view of that strategy, and there’s no intention to change a winning formula.”

Matthews said that one of Spencer’s priorities in his new job will be meeting brokers across the country. He singled out Spencer’s role as chief executive of Aviva’s Canadian general insurance arm as something that qualified him for his new job.

He said: “He did a great job and built a great foundation for that business which is now very high performing in our group. It’s a real star.

“He started in general insurance finance, he’s got a very good, rich, general insurance history with the group.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
