’These appointments reflect the depth and quality of leadership across our firm,’ says leader
Aon has hired a new leadership team for its reinsurance arm following John Neal reversing his decision to join the broker.
Neal announced in January 2025 that he would step down as Lloyd’s of London chief executive to join Aon as global chief executive of reinsurance and global chairman of climate solutions.
However, Neal has made a u-turn on this move, with it being announced yesterday (16 July 2025) that he will become AIG’s new president in December this year.
Following this, Aon has made several appointments to its reinsurance leadership team.
This includes Alfonso Valera becoming chief executive of international for reinsurance, responsible for UK, EMEA and APAC, while Steve Hofmann has been named chief executive of Americas for reinsurance, responsible for North America and Latin America.
The firm also announced the appointment of George Attard as global head of strategy for reinsurance and Tomas Novotny as chairman of international for reinsurance.
Andy Marcell, who leads Aon’s integrated risk capital and human capital capabilities across the firm’s reinsurance, commercial risk, health, wealth and talent teams, said: “These appointments reflect the depth and quality of leadership across our firm.
“Together, they bring decades of leadership experience, deep client relationships, market knowledge and domain expertise. Supported by outstanding talent and experts across our regions, they will help shape the next stage of our growth.”
Neal move
Meanwhile, when Neal joins AIG, he will leads its general insurance organisation, which includes the North America Commercial Insurance, International Commercial Insurance and Global Personal Insurance businesses.

He will also become a member of AIG’s executive leadership team and report to chairman and chief executive Peter Zaffino.
Neal said: “AIG is an iconic, global insurance industry leader, recognised for the deep technical expertise of its team and its remarkable strategic repositioning.
“I am honoured to take on the role of president and look forward to working closely with Zaffino and AIG’s talented colleagues around the world on behalf of our clients and stakeholders.”

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
