Insurance Times rounds up the top five stories making headlines across the market from 28 September to 2 October 2026
The most read story this week was Berkshire Hathaway International being named the UK’s best-performing insurer by market intelligence firm Insurance DataLab following its latest analysis of insurers’ solvency and financial condition reports.

The insurer achieved an overall underwriting rating of 87.3%, earning its second Insurance DataLab Gold Award after previously securing recognition in 2023.
Readers were also interested in Axa’s confirmation that 58 jobs have been impacted following the insurer merging its retail and commercial businesses earlier this year.
In a statement sent to Insurance Times, an Axa spokesperson confirmed that 58 roles are impacted and that the insurer anticipates ”that almost all the impacted colleagues will be retained in newly created roles”.
The third most read story was that the FCA had secured a bankruptcy order against Arthur Temlett, trading as Abacus Insurance Consultants.
In January 2025, the FCA said it was concerned the Scottish broker may have been selling home or motor insurance and not passing premium payments on to the insurance provider.
As a result, restrictions were put in place, with the broker not allowed to carry out any regulated activities, including acting as an insurance broker.
Regulation news also attracted readers’ attention, with Wakam UK saying it remained unaffected by temporary restrictions placed on its European arm by the French regulator.
Wakam SA got a temporary ban on underwriting new contracts and renewing existing contracts from the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) on 25 September 2026.
Mark Christer, chief executive at Wakam UK, told Insurance Times that Wakam UK ”hasn’t got any of these problems – it’s solvent, profitable and growing”.
Finally, Nicki Crabb, head of eTrade and schemes trading at Covéa Insurance, announed that she was leaving the insurer after nine years.
In a LinkedIn post on 27 September 2026, Crabb said: ”I know I’m leaving my department in great hands with my friends. You’ve already promised me you’ll look after each other and the teams. I know you will.”
