Andrew Chandler, managing director at FMG, explains his firm’s entry into the Innovation of the Year – Service Provider category

Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

Andrew Chandler

Andrew Chandler, managing director at FMG

Traditionally, post-accident recovery has focused on one thing – recovering the vehicle. At FMG, we believe the responsibility goes much further. Behind every recovery is a policyholder who may be stranded, vulnerable and uncertain about what happens next. For insurers, there is an equally important challenge – ensuring recovery, storage and onward arrangements are managed efficiently, transparently and cost-effectively.

We developed FMG vehicle recovery assistance (VRA) to address these longstanding challenges. By bringing traditionally fragmented services together into one connected solution, we give policyholders reassurance that someone capable is taking control, while giving insurers greater visibility and control throughout the recovery journey.

We entered because we believe VRA demonstrates how innovation can make a tangible difference to both the customer experience and the commercial outcomes insurers need. It challenges the traditional approach to recovery and sets a higher standard for what policyholders and our partners should expect.

What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?

FMG VRA stands out because it rethinks recovery around the needs of everyone involved, rather than treating it as a standalone vehicle movement. Designed around our insurer and broker partners, VRA connects the journey from roadside recovery and onward travel through to replacement vehicles, storage and repair. It replaces a fragmented process involving multiple suppliers with a more seamless, transparent and controlled solution.

Crucially, this is backed by 40 years of specialist claims management expertise and our experience of managing high-volume recoveries, storage and total losses. We understand the operational complexities, commercial pressures and human impact of an incident and have brought that understanding together in a solution that makes a real difference.

We believe VRA deserves recognition because it combines practical innovation with meaningful outcomes – less uncertainty for policyholders, greater visibility for insurers and a more joined-up recovery experience. It demonstrates that innovation isn’t simply about introducing new technology – it’s about fundamentally improving how a service works for the people who depend on it.

What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

Winning would be a tremendous endorsement of our team’s work and our belief that post-incident recovery can, and should, deliver more. For policyholders, an accident can be a stressful and disruptive experience. For insurers, managing the consequences involves complex operational and commercial decisions. VRA brings these needs together, helping create a simpler, more transparent and supportive journey.

Recognition from Insurance Times would reinforce the importance of innovation that solves real industry challenges, rather than change for its own sake. It would also recognise the strength of our partnerships with insurers, brokers and supply-chain partners, whose collaboration is essential to delivering a better service. At FMG, we never stand still.

We continually look for ways to improve outcomes, simplify processes and deliver greater value for our partners and their customers. Winning would be a proud moment for our colleagues and a powerful platform from which to continue raising standards across the industry.
