’If insurers do not rule out underwriting gas expansion in this critical ecosystem campaign groups will be forced to escalate,’ says protester

Climate activists have targeted senior insurance executives attending the Insurance Innovators Summit in London today (4 November 2026).

Protesters gathered outside the event wearing marine-themed costumes and displaying banners calling for protection of the Coral Triangle, a marine biodiversity region in Southeast Asia.

As part of this, they also urged insurers to rule out underwriting gas expansion projects along the coast of Papua New Guinea.

One protester said: “If insurers do not rule out underwriting gas expansion in this critical ecosystem campaign groups will be forced to escalate.

”We are watching closely how the sector responds to demands. Any companies who fail to meet them will receive increasing attention from protesters.”

Coral triangle

The Coral Triangle spans Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste, and is regarded as one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions.

Campaigners argue that insurance is essential for major developments to proceed and are calling on insurers and other financial institutions to stop supporting new fossil fuel infrastructure, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas.

Protesters warned that if gas extraction goes ahead, ”the project will be a mega carbon bomb – alone it would increase Papua New Guinea’s annual emissions from the industrial and energy sectors by 7%, resulting in over 220 million tons of CO2 emissions”.
