Universal Salvage wants to increase returns to insurers, motor manufacturers and fleet operators by treating all abandoned cars – including electronic lifting vehicles (ELV) – as hazardous waste.

Those disposing of them would need a licence and face inspections by the environment agency. Certificates of destruction would be sent to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority for each vehicle.

Universal Salvage is preparing ten sites to help insurers and manufacturers meet their commitments under a new ELV directive.

The firm is also offering proxy bidding, a new internet facility to open distribution channels for the resale of salvage vehicles.
