Royal & Sun Alliance is planning to break itself up, according to The Business newspaper.

The newspaper did not name the source, but said the company's break-up would be part of far-reaching plans to revive profitability.

The report said the restructuring - to be revealed on
7 November - would underline the board's new strategy of asset sales.

Royal & SunAlliance's change of direction is likely to surprise the City. Investors initially believed that a £750m rights issue would be the main outcome of its internal review.
