Benfield has announced the return of Rodman Fox, who was placed on leave of absence for undisclosed reasons in March.
Fox will be responsible for developing the group's move into the primary insurance broking sector.
The group said Fox "will assist Benfield corporate risk chief executive John Lapsley and the management team in the development phase of the group's new corporate risk insurance broking business".
Fox will be based in New York, Benfield added.
