A broker selling insurance cover against SARS virus has sold £1.2m of premium in just ten days.

The panic of large international companies to protect against the disease has so far netted Goodfellows Insurance broker £300,000 in commission.

The Braintree-based broker said it had launched the policy, which was underwritten by Lloyd's, after being inundated with calls from executives. The disease has so far killed more than 200 people worldwide.

But Goodfellows managing director Simon Burgess has run out of capacity and is struggling to find a Lloyd's underwriter who will take on the risk.

"I have plenty of business with companies desperate to get their staff back to Asia, but won't until they have proper cover," he said.

Conference organisers United Business Media has been forced to postpone a number of key exhibitions because of the SARS virus, leaving its insurer to pick up the bill.

The postponement to June depends on a return to normal, said the organisers in a note.

The disease may also claim its first sporting event in Britain, with competitors in the World Badminton Championships - many of them from the Far East - afraid to travel.
