Secure Inventories is set to launch MyHomeInventory - computer software that enables homeowners to easily prepare and maintain an inventory of their household possessions.

The software will be available both online and on a CD when it is launched next month.

It could help buck the growing trend of people being under-insured - recent research estimates that 5.9m mortgage holders are under-insured in the UK.

Marketing director Steve Read commented: "Many people are unaware of the risks they run if they are under-insured, and that their insurance company is perfectly entitled to, and may well, reduce an insurance payout by the percentage by which an individual is under-insured.

"Without compiling an inventory, it is not easy to work out the appropriate level of cover for your contents. Insurers can only advise people on the level of cover, which results in many people doing it by guesswork, or by selecting a figure based on the number of bedrooms. Either way, it could be a long way off."
