Police force loans uninsured vehicles to college

A police force is providing cars that have been seized for being uninsured to a local college.

Wiltshire Police is loaning the vehicles to Swindon College under a new scheme designed to provide students on mechanical training courses with vehicles to practice on.

The vehicles loaned will be those that have been seized by the force because the driver had no insurance and/or was driving other than in accordance with their licence.

Over recent months, the high price of scrap metal has made it difficult for colleges to purchase vehicles and therefore students have found it increasingly hard to put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.

The scheme will ensure that students have access to a wide range of vehicles from small hatchbacks to 4x4s. These will then become the property of the college for several months before legally they must be returned to be scrapped. The first vehicle - a Peugoet 206 - was provided this week.
