Late last year there was a media frenzy when it slipped out that Direct Line was trying out "voice stress analysis" as a way of beating fraud. Tabloid headline writers played the lie detector card for all it was worth and had a field day criticising the method of analysing voice stresses to catch out fraudsters.

It seems that the story was a bit of storm in a teacup, according to a source close to the company. Yes Direct Line conducted a small scale test of voice stress analysis to combat fraud. But, says the source, the company's test did not prove conclusive and had been terminated before the story broke.
