The insurance industry has come out strongly in support of calls on the BBC's flagship motoring programme to stop glamourising speed.

Top Gear, presented by Kate Humble, was sharply rebuked by a committee of MPs this week for not taking safety seriously enough and depicted fast driving in too positive a fashion.

The ABI's Tony Baker agrees: "There's an awful lot in terms of getting from nought to 60 mph in so many seconds and that sort of thing. If you try and interest them with an item on safety then it will get covered but not as sexily as some other areas."

The BBC defended its record and said cars were only shown exceeding the speed limit in track tests.
