The Ministry of Justice has seconded a senior fraud expert from Zurich in a bid to crack down on staged accidents.
Mark Boleat, head of claims management regulation at Ministry of Justice, said the connection between ‘cash for crash’ scams and accident management companies had been highlighted by the new claims regulation regime.
Boleat said that two businesses had already been refused authorisation because of their suspected involvement in ‘cash for crash’ scams.
He added that a number of others were being actively investigated.
“As soon as we realised the importance of the issue to us, we elevated it in importance. Now it is one of our principle targets,” he told delegates at Insurance Times Future of Personal Injury Claims Conference.
“We are analysing our database of claims management companies, and doing cross-checks against other databases, to identify where we think there are particular problems,” he said.
