Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) used to have the reputation of doing God's work, when it was often the salvation of the broker with the unplaceable risk. Things have, of course, changed.

But Backchat reckons the spirit remains. It seems that R&SA has paid out £2,000 to a drunk who was run over by a car after laying down in the road.

The claimant, Jacky Scollay, 21, had drunk eight pints of beer and two vodkas when he deliberately sprawled in the road to get his girlfriend's attention and was promptly run over when he attempted to get up.

Despite all this, plus the fact that R&SA's client was partially sighted and the claimant had already lost a £20,000 damages claim for his injuries, the insurer still paid out £2,000.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
