Company history: CNA was founded in 1897, with headquarters based in Chicago, Illinois. The company is now one of the largest insurance organisations in the US with assets in excess of $67bn. It is also among the world's largest writers of property and casualty insurance.

Globally, CNA provides businesses and individuals with a broad range of insurance products and risk management services. Insurance lines include property, casualty, financial, marine and accident. CNA products and services are distributed through agents, intermediaries and brokers.

In Europe, CNA operates through two UK-domiciled insurance companies: CNA Insurance Company (formerly known as Maritime Insurance Company) and CNA Insurance Company (Europe).

These two Standard and Poor's A-rated companies are due to be merged during 2003.

Biography: Davies, chief executive of CNA Insurance, has been involved in international business activities for nearly 30 years and the insurance industry in particular for the last ten years. In the early 1970s, he was an economist with Lloyds Bank International, specialising in Latin America and Europe.

Admitted in 1976, Davies was with the City law firm, Lovell White Durrant, before establishing his own practice in Paris and Brussels. To this he brought clients such as Mars, Boeing, SmithKline Beecham, Bacardi, Ernst & Whinney and British Airways.

In 1989, he was made the international partner for the City law firm, Lawrence Graham.
