Abbey National Plc is facing concerns over its insurance business, according to Bloomberg reports today.

The bank's credit rating was lowered by Standard & Poor's yesterday because of the "weakened financial condition" of the Scottish Mutual Assurance unit.

The downgrade will mean more pressure on chief executive, Ian Harley, who warned investors this week that mounting debts would mean far lower profits this year.
