A study by UK-based Bradford & Bingley highlights older backpackers as a promising market.

The research was published to coincide with the inauguration of Bradford & Bingley's travel insurance offering.

Increasingly, Bradford & Bingley said, people prefer to put off taking "the trip of a lifetime" until after they have spent time in employment or begun families.

Bradford & Bingley said: "Nearly half of adults (49%) think the best time to travel is once you have some life experience under your belt, rather than during your student years."

The report said that half of these older travelers preferred to go as backpackers. But it added that their greater relative affluence meant they traveled with such luxuries as digital cameras and handheld computers, adding to the need for insurance.
