The season kicks-off at 8pm this evening (15 August 2025), with Liverpool taking on Bournemouth at Anfield for the first game.

Managers have until 6.30pm tonight to create their fantasy teams – ahead of this deadline, Insurance Times is providing some tips to help competitors select their players.

New changes

One of they key things to remember going into this season is that the Premier League has announced changes to how players are rewarded points.

While attackers may generate most of your points, defenders will now be given two points if they reach a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles.

Midfielders and forwards will also have ball recoveries counted towards this total, but will have to reach a total of 12 actions to garner the extra two points.

These extra points have the ability to generate big swings. For example, had this been in place last year, Nottingham Forest centre back Murillo would have collected an additional 38 points and finished as the second top-scoring defender.

And team-mate Elliot Anderson, who is classed as a midfielder, also would have got 38 more points for defensive contributions last season.

Meanwhile, assists have also been simplified, meaning that attackers are more likely to be awarded the three points that come with creating a goal.

Another change announced to the game will also see managers given two wildcard, free hit, triple captain and bench boost chips – one for each half of the season. The first set of chips will have to be played before gameweek 19 begins on 30 December.

Not a sprint

It is also key to remember to select a team that is optimised for the next few game weeks.

Doing this makes it less likely that managers will have to use the one free transfer they are given each week. And remember, if you don’t use your free transfer, it will be carried into the next game week.

And when changes need to be made later down the line, having all those free transfers banked could be key in helping you secure more points over rivals. You can accumulate up to five free transfers.
