AIG is in talks with John Thornton, former co-president of Goldman Sachs to chair the group, according to reports.
Thornton, 51, has headed Goldman Sachs' operations in Europe and Asia.
It is believed his contacts in Beijing would be of a benefit to the company.
Former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs and current chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup Robert Rubin is also being considered for the role, now held by chairman Frank Zarb.
In addition Richard Breeden, a former chairman of the SEC, has been rumoured to be a candidate.
