Drivers are putting themselves at risk of becoming car crime victims despite widespread warning campaigns, according to Autoglass.

An Autoglass survey has found that four in ten drivers are not locking their car doors. Meanwhile one in four women are not taking precautions to protect themselves while driving.

Despite government pleas to drivers to lock themselves in their cars to combat the threat, Autoglass is now urging insurers to ensure their policyholders know how to protect themselves.

Ian Carlisle, Autoglass managing director said: "We're concerned that drivers might worry that it's risky to lock yourself in but all the advice is that you must do so.

"Insurers must ask themselves what they can do to help their policy holders reduce their chances of becoming a car-jacking victim and they can start by urging customers to follow official advice."
