Operating profit from general insurance across Avica almost doubled to £613m, for the first half of 2004, up from £387m for the same period of 2003.
Group chief executive Richard Harvey said the result was aided by a low level of weather related claims.
Globally, the combined operating ratio for general insurance fell from 101% in 2003 to 97%, ahead of the company's 100% target.
