Brit Insurance has reported that full-year pre-tax profit trebled to £186.3m from £62.4m in 2005.

Gross written premiums for the year rose to £1.23bn from £1.20bn the year before. The combined ratio fell to 86.9% from 105.2% in 2005.

The company also announced that it would have to pay £42m more in claims for hurricanes Katrina, Wilma and Rita than it first thought.

Brit said the outlook for 2007 "remains positive" though admitted it was 'challenging'.
