Fines for failing to comply with EU legislation on the fourth Motor Directive are in excess of £5,000 and not £500,000 as printed in Insurance Times last week. The legislation states that non-compliant policyholders will be liable to a fine not exceeding level five on the standard scale. Level five carries a maximum fine of £5,000. It is up to the Government to decide on the fines, not the Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC), which is in dialogue with the Department for Trade.
