Motorists will be allowed to earn their own no claims discount while being a named driver under someone else's policy, following an announcement by motor insurer Co-operative Insurance (CIS).

The insurer said that it will begin to reward additional drivers, with immediate effect.

Named drivers aged 19 or over can start to qualify for the no claim discount, said CIS.

Each claim free year accrued will be rewarded starting with 35% for one year, 45% for two years up to a maximum of 55% which represents three years or more.

Any no claim discount earned by an additional driver, up to a maximum of 55%, can then be used on a Co-operative Insurance motor policy in their own name, the company added.

Director of General Insurance David Neave, said: “The facility to reward the driving record of additional drivers ensures that those drivers begin to benefit at an early age from their own claim free driving even though they are not the policyholder.

“This will allow additional drivers to start to earn no claim discount in their own right and will provide them with a welcomed ‘step up' the no claim discount ladder for when they chose to insure a car in their own name with Co-operative Insurance”.
