"We won't sell our own policies," says travel insurer

Travel insurer Columbus Direct has moved in to the home and motor insurance market.

Columbus will offer advice over the phone on policies from more than 20 of the UK’s leading insurance companies, providing a personalised alternative to the growing online price comparison market.

David Shortland, a director at Columbus, said: “Online comparison sites can be great for quickly checking lots of policies.

“But from speaking to our travel insurance customers, we know that while lots of people feel that they’re being forced online for the best prices, they’re also a little wary of buying a policy without being able to talk through the details with a real person first.

"So, rather than push our own policies, we’re going to help people find the great ones that are already out there by giving them expert advice instead.”

He added: “We’ve insured millions of travellers since we started back in 1988, so we know what people are looking for from a policy.

“With our new service, we’re following three simple rules; help people find the policy that they need, help them find it quickly, and make sure that they know what they’re covered for.

"And because we’re entirely independent as well, we’ll never push one policy in favour of another that might be better suited to the customer.”
