Insurers beware; the Ford Mondeo is not always "one of the safest places to be".

But the car's much publicised Intelligent Protection System was not smart enough to deal with a randy rhino, as a Midlands family discovered on a day out to the West Midlands Safari Park.

On being held up in traffic in the big beast enclosure, their car became subject to the mounting interest of a rhino. What the car's network of 'neural of sensors' made of the rhino's advances we will never know, but the animal's horn (on his nose) made a mess of the bodywork.

The two-ton animal fell off the car when the driver accelerated sharply, causing extensive damage.

"Our car is a grey Mondeo," the claimant explained. "The rhino took a shine to it."
